(Tobey Ng)
The 2025 Cancer Survivorship Symposium, held on June 22 in Taipei and online, highlighted the growing need to address life beyond cancer treatment, not just survival, but true quality of life. Through a series of expert-led presentations, the symposium explored the medical, psychological, and social dimensions of survivorship, offering a comprehensive view of the challenges cancer survivors face long after treatment ends.
Topics ranged from the integration of palliative care and advanced health technologies to the psychological impact of cancer and the economic burden many survivors endure. Presenters emphasized that survivorship care must be interdisciplinary, utilizing policy reform, mental health services, financial protections, and cross-disciplinary collaboration among healthcare providers. The event also underscored the vital role of NGOs in bridging gaps in care and empowering patients to become advocates for their own well-being.
The symposium served as a powerful reminder that as cancer outcomes improve and cancer becomes more like a chronic illness, the systems that support survivors must evolve as well. It invited reflection on how Taiwan, and the broader global community, can move toward more humane, coordinated, and sustainable survivorship care.
